Matrics Netball Club was formed in 1972 by a group of girls who were undertaking Matriculation (Year 12) at Elizabeth. The Club was formed as a social group to play netball and to reduce stress whilst studying. The Club grew slowly through the seventies and played in summer and winter competitions in the Adelaide area. In 1983, the Club expanded by playing in the Adelaide Metropolitan Netball Division (AMND) competition, starting off in lower grades and finally winning its way into A1 in 1991. This was also the start of the Club's junior program that was run so successfully by Shirley Milner. The first State League coach was Clive Winter who,at that time, was also President of the Club. That year, the first time a team competed in A1, was not a very successful one with the team finishing near the bottom. Notable players for the Club that year were Jane Angove (now Woodlands)and Marnie Winter (now Lock) who were to have a great impact on the Club in later years. In 1992, the Club again struggled, this time under the coaching of Ms Shaw. High profile players in that year were Trudy Gardner, Poalina Hearn and Lee Smith. It wasn't until 1993 that the Club first made the A1 final series under the expert coaching of former Australian Basketball player and State Netball player Jenny Cheeseman; the Club finished fourth. This was the first and last year that any club had flown in interstate imports as the other clubs voted at the end of the season to ban this from then on. Basketball Australia, who was Jenny's employer, was concerned with her coaching netball and she consequently stood down the following year.
